packageexpander

- a ReBlock Projections curated-tool -

Note

If you are trying to install an app on Windows that needs administrator, view what appUnblocker can do for you.

Welcome to packageExpander

packageExpander allows you to install applications stored in .pkg files on macOS without administrator privileges. This uses an oversight in the pkgutil function to expand the contents of the package and allow you to view its content, then using tar to actually extract the main payload that contains the contents of the package.

Important

packageExpander does not work on all package files and some apps installed using this can break or not work properly if this exploit is used. It is still recommended to just install the package normally instead of using this, packageExpander is just more convenient.

Manual Guide

To use packageExpander without our provided scripts, see manual-guide.md.

System Requirements

For the GUI, you must be on at least macOS 14.0 or higher on x86/x64/ARM64. For the CLI, you must be on at least macOS 10.13 or higher on x86/x64/ARM64. packageExpander is very lightweight, so you won't have to worry about hardware restrictions.
