Release 0.22 decreases the number of build dependencies, which should make elementary-xfce easier to install on more systems. It also addresses an issue introduced in newer Gtk4 builds where some icons from our theme were not being rendered correctly in many apps. New icons were added for the Thunar file manager and disk image filetypes. The exe filetype icon was refreshed, and more icons were added for archive and lossless audio filetypes.

0.21

This release adds a "HiDPI" version of the main theme; a scalable SVG-based theme that works better for 2x or 3x window scaling on high resolution displays.

The "dark" version of the theme has been deprecated in favor of a unified main theme where the "light" and "dark" panel icons were colorized and incorporated into the main theme. Additionally, more symbolic icons were added. Symbolic icons, where the desktop theme automatically colors icons for best contrast, have been fairly standard for some time now. Originally our color-but-actually-monochrome light and dark panel icons were meant to give a similar look before true symbolic icons existed. Now that symbolic icons exist and are so widely used, we should no longer need to force color icons to look like symbolic icons.

Now that elementary-xfce provides both more color and more symbolic panel icons, the singular main theme should now look better whether an app wants to use color or symbolic icons. It should also work better with a wider variety of desktop themes. This resolves a lot of visibility and consistency issues as well, especially for mixed light and dark desktop themes. For example, with the old method, a white volume icon would look good on a dark panel, but it would not be visible in light menus or apps. With the new method, if the app requests a color icon, it will be provided. If it requests a symbolic icon, it will be light on the dark panel, and dark on the light menu.

This release adds and updates many icons to be more consistent with, or pulled directly from, upstream elementary. More file type and programming language icons have been added. Improvements in FreeDesktop.org compliance have been made by adding icons missing from the FreeDesktop.org Icon Naming Specification. File type names have been updated to match the newer FreeDesktop.org Mime Database v2.4, fixing issues where some file types were not displaying the correct icons. Previously deprecated and currently unused -darker and -darkest themes/folders have been removed. The last of the PNG icons have been replaced with SVG icons (paving the way for a more scalable HiDPI theme in the future).
