@jsquyres , you're correct. The https://sphinx-rtd-theme.readthedocs.io/en/stable/contributing.html page explains how to make changes to a theme for PRs. I've also found #432 (from 2017), which might be related to the issue you're solving here. |

The diff on this PR is gigantic because the CSS is minified. The diff is effectively this:
This seems to fix #1505 for me, but I don't know if there's a historical or other deeper reason that that stanza is there in the CSS.
