Currently, the Sound Playground Elementary Edition is home to 8 distinct activities, designed to support music theory learning for beginners. You can access these pages by hovering over the "Practice" tab along the top menu.
Each page has a button underneath its activity title which displays step-by-step instructions. By default, these are hidden. This is typically followed by a drop-down menu in which you can customize your desired exercise based on certain criteria.
Some pages also link to exercises which build on similar skills, but address them at different levels.
These include: Little Ear Trainer and Rhythm Grids.
Activities feature different ways to submit answers. You might encounter:
- Drop-down menus, to select text or musical notation.
- Text boxes, for numeric input.
- Multiple choice selection.
Test your knowledge of intervals and pitch direction. This comes in three levels:
- Pitch Direction - determine whether a note goes up, down, or stays at the same pitch.
- Basic Intervals (main page) - determine the distance between pitches played one at a time (numeric intervals, with solfege cues).
- Interval Harmony - determine the distance between pitches played simultaneously (numeric intervals, with solfege cues).
Identify beat values by their name, type (note/rest), and duration, based on a given time signature.
Map a rhythmic pattern onto a grid of subdivided beat values. This comes in three levels:
- Quarter Note Subdivision (main page) - smallest value is a quarter note.
- Eighth Note Subdivision - smallest value is an eighth note.
- Sixteenth Note Subdivision - smallest value is a sixteenth note.
Combine mathematical problem solving (order of operations with some fractions) with knowledge of beat values. All values are according to quarter note-based time signatures.
Transcribe a rhythmic pattern with uniform pitch.
Transcribe a tonal pattern with uniform rhythm.
Transcribe a short melody with changing pitch and rhythm.
Transcribe a two-part harmony with uniform rhythm.
