Using the additional level of abstraction doesn't make sense for an end application. The slf4j-to-log4j adapter remains in place for the libraries we use.

Collection of smaller cleanup tasks. See single commits for details. The most notable changes are switching to using log4j directly instead of going through slf4j and use of assertj in tests where it makes the tests more readable.
Also gets rid of the apache.commons.lang dependency. That's covered by Java language features these days.
