2026-02-14 – control-panel-for-youtube v1.31.0
Browser extension which gives you more control over YouTube by adding missing options and UI improvements - for desktop & mobile browsers
v1.31.0 release notes
Visit the Control Panel for YouTube website for installation links, more information about the extension, and FAQs (mostly about Safari).
Follow @soitis.dev on Bluesky or @ControlPanelFT on Twitter for updates.
Note
Most of Control Panel for YouTube's options are now enabled by default
Default options now include:
- Making more room for regular videos by hiding stream VODs, Mixes, Members only and Upcoming videos, and low-view videos in Related
- Increasing the number of videos visible at once in Home, Subscriptions, and Search
- Hiding non-essential UI elements which add clutter, tidying the sidebar on desktop, fixing common UI annoyances, and reverting weird UI changes YouTube makes
- Full-size theater mode
Any options you've already manually configured will not be affected by this change
- Added install and significant update pages to the website for with information about the new default options, with instructions on how to open and pin the options popup
- Added new Auto +1/+2/+3 options to Grid items per row which shows 1, 2 or 3 more thumbnails than YouTube natively wants to show in grids on desktop, or 1 more thumbnail when YouTube wants to display 1 or 2
- Added an option to display the Home grid as a list
- Added an option to animate removing videos which were hidden using YouTube's built-in Hide/Not interested/Don't recommend channel functionality on desktop (enabled by default unless your device is configured for reduced motion)
- Added an option to hide the "Experiencing interruptions?" popup - if it's not being hidden, we make the popup message more accurate and hide the link about turning off your adblocker instead
- Fixed YouTube's Home and Subscriptions grid loading placeholders on desktop so they match thumbnail size, flow correctly, and show only one row based on the current grid size
- Fixed YouTube's Home and Subscriptions grid loading spinner on desktop to always appear below the rest of the grid
- Added an option to turn off the above fixes for YouTube's Home and Subscriptions grid loading UI on desktop, in case YouTube ever makes a change to their implementation which breaks loading more videos
- Disabling themed hover effects now also applies to the Subscriptions page on desktop
- Hide video metadata now also hides clutter in the full screen description panel on desktop
- Restored the default touch response colours when disabling themed hover effects
- Changed the Chinese version of the extension name to be more explicitly "for YouTube"
- Enabled Hide Premium upsells by default, but made it do nothing for Premium users
- Fixed ads not being blocked on /watch pages which have been left open for a long time
- Fixed reverting the Related sidebar to its old width and min-width on desktop
- Fixed how list view handles the Shorts shelf, the legacy video renderer for Movies & TV videos, and items which don't have a channel avatar or channel link
- Fixed certain desktop menus not being detected the first time they're opened in the current tab, e.g. the video menu in Home which we add Hide channel to
- Fixed Automatically pause channel trailers pausing if you try to manually play the trailer after the Featured tab loads
- Fixed an error when the Save menu is opened on a /watch page
- Fixed a bunch of potential future crashes where we were assuming an element will exist
New versions have to be reviewed and approved for each browser before they're available to install or upgrade to.
These options allow you to have more items per row while still scaling down at smaller window sizes
e.g.: Auto +2 displays 2 more grid items than vanilla YouTube wants to:
Vanilla YouTube Grid items per row: Auto +2

The Auto options always only add 1 extra item when YouTube wants to display 1 or 2:
3 items instead of 2 2 items instead of 1

Removing Hidden / Not interested videos is now animated by default (unless you have a reduced motion preference active)
If multiple items are hidden at once, the animation is delayed until the last item's Undo timer finishes

This also applies to list view:
Before After

If you don't use the new option to hide the popup (we personally find the popup reassuring, and it's nice to have something to look at), we make its message more accurate
We've also made fixes and improvements to how other items appear in list view, e.g. the Shorts shelf is now more compact if you're not hiding Shorts:

Selectors for theming are currently hardcoded based on normal and high constrast Lights out - we have improvements to theming coming in Control Panel for Twitter v5 which should make this less brittle.
