Ensuring compliance with safety helmet regulations is critical in hazardous work environments such as construction sites and industrial plants. Manual monitoring is labor-intensive, error-prone, and difficult to scale across large operations.
SafeGuard Corp seeks an automated computer vision solution that can detect whether workers are wearing safety helmets, improving safety enforcement while reducing reliance on human oversight. The system is intended to support proactive safety monitoring and risk reduction in real-world operational settings.
Although all trained models achieved extremely high validation and test accuracy—including near-perfect scores for VGG-based architectures—deeper analysis revealed that these results were misleading.
Key findings include:
- The models primarily learned scene-level differences rather than helmet-specific features.
- “With Helmet” images predominantly depicted workers in industrial environments, while “Without Helmet” images were largely close-up portrait-style photos.
- As a result, model performance was inflated due to dataset bias, not true helmet detection capability.
- Misclassification analysis confirmed that predictions relied on background context rather than safety equipment presence.
These insights highlight the importance of dataset quality and representativeness in safety-critical computer vision applications.
Multiple deep learning models were trained and evaluated, including CNN architectures and transfer learning approaches. While quantitative metrics appeared strong, qualitative inspection and error analysis demonstrated that accuracy alone was insufficient to validate model readiness for deployment.
This project emphasizes the necessity of combining metrics with domain-aware evaluation when developing computer vision systems for real-world use.
