I intentionally didn't use this as it can be incredibly hard to tell which side players are turning to, might wanna make this an option in the options menu. Should be easy to add i can do it if you want

Imo it's basically useless as-is, I think suppressing the lighting is the only way to go. If anything, it being mostly the same color makes it harder to discern information about the player than if it wasn't materialized at all.

not having shadows means a situation like this can be confusing, basically engine lighting will make the entire player appear "flat"

Perhaps we only display the colored portion when they're behind walls or something. Then your example case would work fine because they're normal textured, and when looking at someone through walls, the specifics of their exact orientation are rarely important
