Release-mode-only failures like this are R8/minification stripping logback classes that are only reachable through reflection (Joran and the pattern/file-name converters are all resolved by class name, so R8 can't see them being used). As of #418 (merged), logback-android ships consumer ProGuard rules inside the AAR, so from the next release this works out of the box with minifyEnabled true. Until then, add this to your proguard-rules.pro:

-keep class ch.qos.logback.** { *; }
-dontwarn javax.mail.**
