Help in starting a new project

Hello,
I'm working on my graduation project of a Master's degree in Integrated Design.
The project strives to increase awareness to the space debris problem in an interesting and involving way.

My intention is to build a First Person point of view of Space Debris using AR and visual layering.
For proof of concept I need to generate a live display of debris in LEO relative to a known position.

As for my background, I'm a mechanical engineer and have some (little) experience with code but it's not my expertise.. I do have the ability and the motivation/personal interest to implement the code but I need guidance.
Hoping to make my first steps on Github... and collaborate.

At the current time I need some guidance in:

1. Getting started with a code that pulls debris data of a public database and makes the transformations to XYZ coordinates.
2. Generating a real time "ground view" of the debris, rocket engines and dead satellites that are in line of sight. (which I'll project on the surrounding interior of a room)

If anyone would be willing to help or (hopefully) collaborate, I'll be grateful.
