Improve Sidebar UI & Add Global Menu Navigation Across All Screens

Currently, the sidebar navigation UI is inconsistent and limited in usability.
Menu options are not easily accessible across all screens, and the overall layout feels outdated compared to modern UI standards.
This issue proposes improving the sidebar design and ensuring that key menu options are consistently available across the entire application to enhance usability and user experience.

Problems Identified

• Sidebar UI looks outdated and visually inconsistent
• Navigation options are not accessible across all screens
• No clear active/selected state for menu items
• Sidebar takes unnecessary space on smaller screens
• Poor discoverability of important sections

Proposed Solution

• Redesign the sidebar with a clean and modern UI
• Ensure menu options are available across all screens
• Add clear active/hover states for menu items
• Improve spacing, icons alignment, and typography

Optionally add:

• Collapsible sidebar
• Responsive behavior for small screens
• Top navigation + sidebar combo if applicable

UI/UX Suggestions

• Consistent icon style for all menu items
• Highlight active route/page
• Better padding and alignment
• Optional tooltips for icons
• Improved contrast for better accessibility

If you are keen to contribute to improving the website you're very welcome - this is really just a side-project to help the users of our application, and none of the core contributors of Subsurface has got much focus on it at the moment.

Every time I read "more modern" in the context of design, my brain substitutes "gratuitous changes to follow the latest fad"...

I think it's a pretty fair statement that our web site is good enough and not preventing users from finding out adopting Subsurface.

I'm not opposed to improving accessibility, but on my list of priorities, changes to web site design are far down the bottom
