Creating own server fails with the first packages

Here's a HOWTO for Ubuntu 24, but it's still experimental: https://pygmalion.nitri.org/howto-install-opentopomap-on-ubuntu-24-04-lts-1837.html . That's how I created a tile server for my region.

A quick note on the tile.openmaps.fr's instance (Maybe I should write that somewhere in the repo) :

• I did not use pyhgtmap to generate contours, but gdal_contours (I find it easier to operate, and already in Debian/Ubuntu's repo)
  And since mountains don't move often, I've kept a PG dump of earth contours (130GB) I regularly re-import, saving me the generation step.
• For hillshading, I have à 11GB geotiff file for the whole world. (Freely accessible here https://openmaps.fr/download/hillshade/)
• For colored+shading at low zoom same here : https://openmaps.fr/download/colored-hillshade/ for anyone who want to speed up the installation by sharing already generated files

I can also provide the contour file if that can help test the setup.

As a more general thought : I don't know what will be the future of the development of the OTM-raster/mapnik version, since @der-stefan is working on a vector version of OTM. And I'm looking forward to see his results.
But if rendering isn't as great as the OTM-raster or if having different choice between several alternatives (redundancy) is interesting, I'll be tempted to continue improving OTM-raster by :

• Upgrading contours+hillshading to higher resolution
• having a 2nd version with more POIs, emphasis on mountain difficulties (sac_scale, via_ferrata, mountaineering)

But right now, I'm more in a stand-by situation regarding style improvement.
The urgent matter was to secure the continuation of tile serving, with all zooms and updated OSM data.

Thanks for sharing your experience and insights, @sletuffe -- much appreciated. It’s great to see this kind of practical knowledge being passed on.

I’m also curious about the vector rendering work by @der-stefan and where that may lead, but for now the existing raster tile setup perfectly meets my needs, so it’s good to keep it running and maintained.
