Closed Captioning and Subtitle Files Suddenly Not Working (Chrome / Firefox)

Hello,

I just noticed that closed captions and subtitles don't seem to appear anymore in Chrome or Firefox.

Here is an example using this cookbook recipe.

It appears this stopped working on the example site with this commit:
