Is there a sample/instructions on how to use the external script for the react script editor webpart?

I have built the react webpart and when deployed, I do see the radio button to flip between using the external script vs inline script. Got a sample js file that I added to a folder in the siteassets directory and pasted the path to the file in the external script location.
when trying to display either the app page, or use it as webpart in a page, I am getting the direct javascript from the file being displayed in the webpart. trying to figure out what I am doing wrong and was hoping that someone might have already tried it and succeeded and could possibly share the knowledge!!
