Document Sets Commands 🗃️

🎯 Aim

The aim would be to add commands to CLI which would allow managing Document Sets in SharePoint library. Remember that 'old thing' from SP 2013 😉. Well I guess SharePoint Online still supports it, Even has a bit of modern UI added to it, so maybe it would be a good idea for CLI for M365 to support it.

🤔 Ideas/remarks

• by default document sets are not enabled on site (feature needs to activated) or on a lib (we need to have a specific content type which is a DS content type added). Maybe some ensure kind of command would be needed which would tell if some additional settings need to be done before we may proceed
• of course we would need standard CRUD operations to be able to add, remove, set document set as well as add, remove files to it.
• I wonder if we may introduce some command which would also support setting it up. I think we might ever reuse some already implemented commands like the once for managing content types

... that's what I have till now, not much I know. But it's a start 😉. Lets discuss if it's needed and if yes which API we may use and what could be done 👍

I'm not in favor of a separate ensure command for the feature.

• We could retrieve the DocumentSet feature when executing a CRUD command to check if it's enabled. If not enabled, throw an intelligible error.

• Or just trust on the error coming from SharePoint. It might give enough clue about what's going on if the feature is not enabled. This might be the best route, as you would probably need more permissions on the site to retrieve the feature than is logical for the execution of the command.

Also: we need to research the necessary API to use. Setting the content type on a folder is not enough. Features like field inheritance only work if you create them in the proper way.
I believe we may need the older list.svc endpoint.

to be precise it was /_vti_bin/listdata.svc back in the SP 2013 days 😋. Probably we will need to use it as well 👍
