ViewModel Rewrite (more error handling)

Rewrite the interactions between UI and backend. This includes a significant rewrite of error handling.

Also, important to remember that while GSR groups can probably be sunsetted, some of the "offshoots of that feature" still require funcationality. And, availability to Amy Gutmann Hall should be considered.
