Stop timer when you open the menu

I want to have a look into the help file e.g. without the timer ticking.

If there was a Pause button, then this feature wouldn't be necessary.

I'm currently struggling how to solve this without a pause button or such a thing. Furthermore, an upcoming "serious mode" or "pen and paper mode" will probably not let the user see the grid if the game is paused, too. Still thinking about how to fit this into the game play.
