Add a "lite" image with less tools?

I use jakzal/phpqa to run only php-cs-fixer and phpstan.

And the image is quite large even if I use only 2 tools:

Proposals:

• add a lite image that contain only the 10 or 15 most used tools, we could use Packagist to estimate the popularity of each tool from its number of downloads e.g. https://packagist.org/packages/dephpend/dephpend
• generate one image for each type of tool: https://github.com/jakzal/toolbox/tree/master/resources but it would create 16 images, that's too much. Instead, tools may be grouped in 3 or 4 groups that are relevant :
  • architecture, compatibility, documentation, metrics and refactoring
  • checkstyle, deprecation, linting, phpcs and security
  • phpstan and psalm
  • test and tools

I need to think about it as it will add to the build times.

Also, an approach needs to be considered.

Once way is to copy tools from an already built image:

FROM php:8.4-cli-alpine

COPY --from=jakzal/phpqa:php8.4-alpine /tools/php-cs-fixer /tools/php-cs-fixer
COPY --from=jakzal/phpqa:php8.4-alpine /tools/phpstan /tools/phpstan

^^ the above image will weight 118MB vs the "full" image 652MB

This would make that some extensions are missing. This is another question to consider, next to what tools to include, what extensions to include?

Another way would be to tag the tools we want on the light image, and build it the same way as other images, but only install tagged tools.

One other idea to improve build times and reduce the risk of authentication problems we sometimes face, would be to build images for older PHP versions less often (i.e. once every couple of days) 🤔
