Software update preferences not working

Description

The options to disable checking for updates does not work on MacOS. I had it unchecked for almost 2 months and I've been getting notifications and visual cues that there is an update.

Reproduce

1. Deselect the checkbox "Automatically check for updates"
2. Wait one day staring at the computer for a new version to be released
3. Get upset that I see a message that there is an update

step 3 may vary

Expected behavior

When I deselect the option I don't expect to see the following:

• an exclamation icon in mac toolbar
• a blue "Update available" in the bottom right corner of the desktop app
• an alert notification in the desktop app telling me there is an update
