Latest Update. Power button shut down does not save metadata

Description

Saving changes in the UI like box art or core is not persisting restarts of the device.

Additionally, the "Recently Played" playlist changes does not survive restarts.

Expected behavior

Saving box art and core settings in the UI should persist restarts.

Additionally, when playing a game, it should be moved to the top of the Recently Played list. That list's order should survive restarts.

Steps to reproduce the bug

• make a change via the UI, which can include:
  • changing a game’s metadata like preferred core or scraping and changing its box art. Click “save” and observe that the core/ box art/etc has been saved in the UI.
• restart the device
• observe that the core or box art, etc has not persisted the restart.

Additionally:

• Play a game
• Notice it is moved to the top of the Recently Played list.
• Restart the device
• Observe the Recently Played list has changed and the game is no longer at the top of the list and is instead in the previous position it was in the list. It is as if the play count is not surviving restarts.

I have "switch power button tap to off" toggled on, and quick mode enabled.

I turn off the device by pressing the power button.

I've had the device and ArkOS for over a year and just recently started noticing this behavior of not saving changes.

Ok, so you're just pressing the power button for like 1 second and letting it go through it's shutdown process correct? You're not holding the power button down until it shutsdown correct?

I'm assuming that changes to artwork or last played time might be saved in memory and then committed to disk at some point.

Maybe this process is being interrupted?

Is there anything I can try updating in my side to narrow down the cause?

Have you done any other modifications to your setup? Did you add any other features via apt or anything else?

I don't think I have any custom modifications other than Syncthing that syncs some game save folders.

Do you know how to ssh into your setup? If so, please run the following command and give me the output of the following command:

df -h

It should show something like the following:

I made some headway. Going into emulation station and selecting "shutdown" from the menu, rather than hitting the power button, saves the metadata correctly.

When I use that method of shutdown, all my metadata persists when I restart the machine.

I also checked, and disabling Quick Mode doesn't affect the issue. Meaning, whether quick mode is enabled or disabled, if I press the power button to turn off the machine, no metadata changes persist a restart.

Only selecting shutdown from the emulation station menu will allow metadata changes to persist a restart.

Since I'm on the latest ArkOS version and I don't remember this being an issue in the past (I've used ArkOS for over a year), do you think this could be a regression in the latest version?

I can confirm the same behavior on my clone R36S. The power button does not ever trigger a clean/full shutdown - it only ever "pulls the plug". Maybe there's a way to get the button to trigger an actual shutdown, but I haven't looked into it yet. Hope this helps.

If you have a spare sd card, try a fresh install and see if the issue happens there. If not, then do an update and see if the issue happens then. The power button tap configuration is a clean shutdown but it should shutdown ES cleanly so that the meta data is saved before the shutdown.

The R36 units are not supported here. You'll need the community version provided here for support.

What do you mean about trying an update? If I try to update ArkOS it reports that there isn't a new version to update to.
