GSoC Proposal Guidance – Improving rsync_tmbackup Importer

Hi, I’ve recently contributed a few PRs to borg-import, mainly around the rsync_tmbackup importer (tests, bug fixes, and improvements).

Some of the areas I worked on include:

• Fixing backup.marker lookup to use the provided root directory
• Improving prefix handling for timestamp parsing
• Adding tests for rsync-based importers
• Improving error messages for better debugging

I’m planning to submit a GSoC proposal focused on improving importer robustness, edge case handling, and overall reliability.

I wanted to ask:
Does this direction align well with the project goals?
Are there any specific areas or problems you would recommend focusing on?

Guess we can't do a GSOC project for the importers, there are multiple ideas of higher importance (see the ideas list) and we likely only can do one or few projects.

I understand that importer-related work may not be a priority for GSoC this year.

I’ll go through the ideas list and start exploring the higher priority areas.
If possible, I’d appreciate any suggestion on which idea would be a good fit to start contributing to.

Meanwhile, I’ll continue improving my understanding of the codebase and contributing where useful.
