Start PID on CHARGE

To Terracota-6 specifically, but welcome any input.

If you are still connected, would you please explain why you suggested to uncheck the 'start PID on charge' option. I understood that if I was doing an auto roast this option should be on. Which is what I had been doing but unfortunately my PC dropped the Kaleido, perhaps a momentary loss of wifi, and due to my lack of experience I lost a roast. So I had to re-configure the connection and settings where I got stuck on the PID options.

Back in Aug 26 we were having a discussion re my entry -- auto drop did not start cooling fans #1961 -- and you suggested 2 methods for " DROP triggers ON COOLING". In the text for method 2 you stated I should "Uncheck the option "Start PID on CHARGE"" in the PID Control dialog.

I tried both your methods without success in reducing the time cooling fans started. So I decided to go the manual route just before dropping the roast batch. I'm not as dextrous as when young, but it work better time wise and no problem in consistency. However, the PID on Charge option never was resolved because I failed to follow up.

Whether to enable "Start PID on CHARGE" depends on your automated process design:
Fully automatic temperature-controlled roasting → usually enable it.
Need precise control of cooling timing (especially immediate cooling after DROP) → may need to disable it to prevent the PID from delaying heating shutdown or interfering with the cooling signal.
If you are using the Kaleido M2 Sniper and wish to optimize the automatic cooling response, it is recommended to combine the Artisan alarm system to trigger the control fan in advance based on temperature, instead of relying on the DROP Event status.

This is my current/standard alarm file to which I have now added "stop PID on drop". Only change I make is to the slide burner -- depending on charge temp, bean density, and ambient temperature. Unsure why that 205C is there?? I had already been using your suggestion for the "on cooling", but as I mentioned had not seen any change in cooling reaction times so kept it unchecked. Perhaps the addition of 'stop PID on drop' might be the key the timing issue. In any event, when time is avail please look over the alarms settings and sequence. Appreciate your input.

No need to turn PID OFF on DROP via an Alarm rule. The PID Dialog has a flag to "Stop PID on DROP" and also one to "Start PID on CHARGE".

Note that in Artisan v3.4 there is also a "Stop PID on DROP". So you could have the PID on during your roast via "Start PID on CHARGE" and have it stop automatically on DROP with that new "Stop PID on DROP" option and do your cooling thing. Am I missing something? Anyhow, at any time you can start/stop the PID by a click on the CONTROL button while holding the COMMAND (macOS) or CTRL (Windows) key, or alternatively click the button without modifier key and use the ON / OFF buttons provided by the PID Control dialog.

Since Artisan v3.4, clicking DROP returns the software to its initialization (idle) state, which is not very user-friendly for continuous roasting. To initiate another roast, you need to click ON and then START to enter the machine preheating state.
What approaches can be used to streamline this workflow for continuous roasting?

Hm. This is not really true. DROP just marks the end of the roast. OFF returns Artisan to its idle state. Then you would use the KeepON flag (menu Config >> Sampling) to have Artisan automatically go back to ON. Then you can have alarm rules which go from ON to START based on some condition that fit your approach.

If Artisan goes from DROP to OFF for you, this is not a default behavior and might be caused by some alarm rules you estabished, or an action on the DROP button!? Share your configuration to have me find this out. Anyhow, there is no change on that between Artisan v3.4 and 3.2 or any earlier version on that.

I must have accidentally disabled the "Keep ON" option at some point — or perhaps I just don’t know Artisan well enough yet.
It is indeed the chaotic result caused by the alarm rules I set.
