I know you've already been working on support for the Seeed E1002 and want to support the E1004 as well.
Seeed has just released the reTerminal E1003:

It's high res for epaper at 1404x1872px and has 16 grayscale tints, so with dithering applied to images there's a lot of dynamic range to create smooth gradients. I've been testing it and I've found it is really good for black and white photography. Much more convincing as a photo print than the spectra based devices.
Seeed is aware this panel is a good fit for photography, so they're even selling a picture frame for it:
