This is probably a matter of style but the scaffold suggests that retail views should always call the master template in order to use macros and slots. I think that in this context subscribing to the event makes more sense.

I'd add something like this to the retail.__init__.py or a macros file.

I sort of like the event-based model, now that you've suggested it, although it is a little more "action-at-a-distance" than my usual practice: I tend to use a helper function to wrap view-specific items in a common namespace, e.g.:

def _namespace(context, **kw):
    ns = {
        'master': get_renderer('templates/master.pt').implementation(),
         ...  # maybe use 'context' in some way
     }
    ns.update(kw)
    return ns

Each view function then uses it so:

    return _namespace(
        context,
        prolog=prolog,
        entries=entries,
    )
