Gource is a tool that generates a visually interactive tree of your Git repository's history. It allows you to visualize the activity and evolution of the project over time, showing commits, file changes, and contributions in a graphical format.

How to use Gource with Git:

1. Install Gource:

   • macOS (via Homebrew):

     brew install gource
     

   • Ubuntu (via apt):

     sudo apt-get install gource
     

   • Windows: You can download Gource from its official website, or use a package manager like Chocolatey:

     choco install gource
     

2. Navigate to Your Git Repository: Go to the directory of your Git repository:

   cd /path/to/your/git/repository
   

3. Generate the Visualization: Run Gource in your repository folder:

   gource
   

   This will generate a default visualization of your repository's commit history.

4. Customize the Visualization:

   • To specify a particular time range or limit the depth of the tree:

     gource --since '2022-01-01' --max-file-depth 2
     

   • You can also output the visualization as a video (e.g., in .mp4 format):

     gource -1280x720 --output-ppm-stream - | ffmpeg -y -r 30 -f image2pipe -vcodec ppm -i - output.mp4
     

5. Visualize Specific Branches: To focus on a particular branch:

   gource --branch your-branch-name
   

Features of Gource:

• 3D visualization: Files are represented as nodes, and commits as events that change the state of these files.
• Contributions: You can see the activity of individual contributors based on their commits.
• Customizable appearance: You can modify colors, fonts, and other visual aspects.
