Seeing state validation failures in `geostrophic/convergence_both`

In the following test, I saw state validation failures during forward runs for both geostrophic/convergence_both tests:

I tried reducing rk4_dt_per_km from 2.0 to 1.5 and 1.0 without any luck. Not sure that the time step is to blame.
